Nova was constructed on a challenging L-shaped site in the Yankee Hill neighborhood of Milwaukee. This mixed-use development has become a distinctive landmark on Van Buren Street, featuring 251 apartments and 8 street-level townhomes with private entries. Purposely designed to be a totally different aesthetic for this developer’s portfolio, Nova willingly took risks with color and materials. In addition to the breathtaking city views, Nova’s residents enjoy amenities such as an infinity pool, indoor/outdoor club room, multi-level fitness center, coworking spaces, and pet spa.
Replacing a surface parking lot on a prominent urban corner, Nova defines a new standard for development along this important corridor‒ increasing density, activating the sidewalks, and providing commercial space with outdoor seating at the corner of the site. Structured parking is well-concealed within the block, allowing for the activation of the building envelope and street elevations.
Nova takes cues from its urban setting as inspiration for the exterior design using contrasting contemporary materials in a playful and dynamic way. Building façades feature a dynamic interplay of light, massing, and high-quality materials that give the building its unique identity and personality. A poolside amenity court also makes the most of Milwaukee skyline views.
Interiors are bold with colorful shared spaces that are filled with unexpected moments of joy. The coral tones of the interior contrast moments of contemporary black-and-white in dialogue with the exterior cladding. Extensive space planning accommodates all requested amenities in logical harmony around the design challenge of a central stair.
