Aya is an luxury dining experience where contemporary design distills the textures, materiality, and atmosphere of the Mediterranean and Middle East cuisine into a layered spatial narrative. By embedding cultural references through texture rather than theme, choreographing movement within fixed conditions, and balancing grand scale with human warmth, the design creates a layered, immersive environment.

Aya is a restaurant envisioned as a contemporary reflection of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine. The design abstracts regional textures, materials, and atmosphere to create a space that feels layered, soulful, and personal. This was achieved by using Mediterranean inspired olive trees that anchor the space, textured green banquettes, and a patterned tile behind the bar inspired from traditional star and cross motif from the region.

Another aspect of the design was to embrace both masculine and feminine materiality. Dark wood wall paneling, tambour accents, polished concrete floors, and black ceilings establish a moody, grounded foundation. In contrast, crystal light fixtures, upholstered pink booths, blush-infused porcelain panels, and warm brass detailing introduce luminosity and refinement.

The private dining room, named Lahza—Arabic for “a moment”—extends the narrative. Large glass doors provide privacy while maintaining visual openness, ensuring the space feels special without isolation. The bold color palette references accents throughout the restaurant, creating a distinctive atmosphere that invites guests to experience ‘a moment’ of luxury.

At the chef’s counter, porcelain panels and a suspended shelf frame the kitchen like a living portrait while carefully placed walls shield views of utilitarian zones.

AYA @ ASCENT

Ascent MKE began construction in 2020 with a ground-floor retail space intended to be activated by a luxury dining experience. Five years later, Aya came to fruition, allowing the team to come full circle and see that original vision realized.
