Located on an elevated site in the heart of The Village of Wauwatosa, the design of 7474 Harwood draws inspiration from the rich architectural heritage of the surrounding neighborhood while providing 153 new residences to a vibrant downtown.
Through the layers and levels of outdoor space, residents have opportunities to enjoy the outdoors and connect to the neighborhood, which in turn reveals activity and life on the building’s exterior.
Walk up townhouses with street facing patios further contribute to a dynamic and walkable community scene. The residential scale of the townhouses is designed as a contemporary interpretation of a classic rowhouse. Each with distinct entries, patios, cornices, and other classic details common to the village vernacular.
A significant percentage of the site remains devoted to public space, tenant amenity spaces, and landscape features, all of which activate and enhance adjacent public park spaces. A neighboring park is embraced and directly engaged with a new public plaza connecting into existing pedestrian infrastructure.
In addition to providing an overlook and gathering space, the new plaza functions as a public flex space- able to host neighborhood festivals and pop-up events in the park.
Through the use of scale, massing, and materials, the architecture balances between a sensitivity to the historical context while at the same time asserting itself into the community as a contemporary addition.
